1942: Douglas MacAdam performed tests to define how well the average human eye distinguishes similar colors
=> A homogeneous color impression results in an elliptical area within the CIE 1931 (x,y)-chromaticity diagram, the so called MacAdam ellipse
MacAdam ellipses and SDCM
- Dimension of a MacAdam ellipse is given by the so called Standard Deviation of Color Matching (SDCM)
- SDCM characterises the quality of color differences
- The range of Kelvin (e.g. +/- 300 K) gives no hint about homogeneity
