CES 2017: OSRAM shows new smart automotive technologies

With new smart technologies OSRAM reaches the next stage in automotive lighting. Future lighting technologies should be efficient. Above all, it should also provide for more safety when driving. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from 5th to 8th of January 2017, OSRAM will showcase its latest high-tech vehicle applications: “Laser-based car lighting is much brighter and enables a doubled high-beam range. The improved down-road visibility and clarity for the drivers increases safety for all on the road,” said Olaf Berlien, CEO of OSRAM Licht AG. The fatality rate of night-time travel is up to four times that of day-time travel. A glare-free full-beam is another of OSRAM’s solutions to enhance visibility. In addition to laser technology, advanced pixel headlights represent the future of automotive lighting. Together with partners, OSRAM developed a tiny LED matrix chip with more than 1,000 individually controllable pixels. A headlight comprising several such LED chips allows permanent driving with glare-free full beam.

The latest automotive technology using invisible light is called LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging): A multi-channel laser light source enables vehicles to generate an accurate, three-dimensional image of their surroundings and use this information to initiate the appropriate driving maneuvers.

Another innovative technology, that will be presented at the CES 2017, are Organic LEDs (OLEDs) for rear lights. OLEDs produce light in very thin layers and open up new pathways for design. OLEDs can be separated so that switchable light surfaces can be arranged very close to each other, allowing for 3D shadow effects and dynamic functionality. In the near future, design options will be further expanded by the production of OLEDs on foils, allowing the OLEDs to be bent into any conceivable shape. In addition to offering enormous flexibility of design, another advantage of OLED technology is the very little energy consumption.

Visitors to OSRAM’s CES booth will have the opportunity to take part in a virtual reality (VR) adventure to help them experience various automotive light sources – ranging from ambience lighting to extra-bright and far-reaching headlights. OSRAM will be located at booth #6338 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
